Into the light.
There were two pairs of them. First the vulture-like creatures appeared, not gathering height from the rising air at edge of the mesa, but circling one another, dropping slightly. The two ravens came swooping in from the same direction, but traveling much faster, screaming loudly. The vultures rose slowly, straining in the confined space, no doubt regretting having lost so much altitude. The ravens did fancy acrobatics above them, just to embarrass the big birds, but didn't follow them when they finally extricated themselves from the low space and rose towards the sky.
